"There is a light that shines beyond all things on Earth, beyond us all, beyond the heavens, beyond the highest, the very highest heavens. This is the light that shines in our heart." - Chandogya Upanishad 3.13.7.

Today marks the one year anniversary of our much-anticipated move
across town to this great house we live in now. I don’t miss the
old place we were renting at all. And I certainly don’t miss the
“intersection from hell” at Locarno & 36th Ave. or the traffic on
that busy street.

Sadly, today also marks the 15th anniversary of my Granddaddy
Shelley’s death. Hard to believe he’s been gone that long. Sure
doesn’t seem like it! Thinking of you and still miss you and love
you, Granddaddy!

Hatred: Appeased by Love

—————————————————————–

Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world; it is
appeased by love. This is an eternal Law. — Dhammapada

A leading translation of the Dhammapada is available from

The passage quoted above is so true! Returning hatred for hatred
just creates more of the same. Love and responding to situations
from a position of love should be the rule of the day. We all
experience hatred toward someone or towards a group of people
from time to time. It’s human nature. Ours is a troubled world.
But if we cultivate an awareness of our thoughts and feelings,
then that opens up the possibility of choosing to respond to
life’s situations in a more positive way.

When the opportunity for hate to be expressed presents itself,
examine the situation and your reactions to it and your reactions
to the people involved. Examine your reasons for feeling hatred.
No matter how justified feeling hatred in a given situation may
seem, try consciously choosing to love the people involved as
fellow living, breathing, thinking, feeling human beings. Instead
of reacting with anger and hostility from your Emotional Mind
without thinking things through, choose to respond calmly from
your Reasoning Mind.

Back in the 1980s, the slogan “Choose Life!” was popular and was
featured by the band Wham! in the music video for their song
“Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”:

So, I’d like to suggest choosing life — choosing the most
positive, loving, compassionate response to life’s situations as
is possible. And as with any skill, the ability to respond from a
position of loving awareness will improve with time and practice.

This is one of my favorite winter shots. I took it during a hike
on the Albert Loop Trail at the Eagle River Nature Center in
Eagle River, Alaska on February 17, 2008. Hope you enjoy it!
